On the night of  November 11th,1950 temperatures in North Korea dropped to -10 degrees Fahrenheit. Marines in the Chosin reservoir had still not been issued cold weather uniforms or equipment. Throughout the next few weeks men started complaining that their hands and feet hurt and some lost limbs due to frostbite. The rifle platoons had no shelter from the ice, snow and rain. In front line positions no warming fires were permitted and most of the time food was frozen solid. The Marine’s socks, leggings, boots and trousers were frozen to their legs. Snow was constantly falling and was usually between 12 and 20 inches deep. Nearly every man in the 7th Marine Regiment at one point in time was complaining of  bloody, blistered feet.
