The official name of the battle is the Battle of the 3rd Ypres but it is more commonly known as the Battle of Passchendaele. U-Boats were operating out of Zeebrugge with great success and the admiralty was increasingly worried about what might happen in the English Channel . Flanders was notorious for wet weather at this time of year and although the average rainfall was only 8mm for August. During August of that year; however, 76mm fell, making this one of the wettest  battles of  World War 1. The mud and rain decreased morale and got into everything, such as rifles, food, and even open wounds if they were not bandaged properly.
